Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities Giving Back

Edmonton celebrates and embraces diversity as a collective strength, where diverse groups come together to make the community a better place for everyone. A shining example of this action is the Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities (ECMC).

The ECMC is an organization that seeks to unite the voice of Muslim communities in Edmonton to protect, promote, and enhance the understanding of Islam and Muslims in public policy, education, peace, and safety. In 2025, the Council’s Dawn to Dusk campaign marked its sixth year of raising funds in support of Edmonton’s Food Bank. This campaign is inspired by Ramadan, the Islamic holy month for fasting, reflection, prayer, and acts of generosity. During Ramadan, Muslims fast between dawn and dusk, deepening their faith through prayer, fasting, Quran recitation, and acts of devotion and kindness. Charitable giving is also an important part of both Ramadan and the Islamic faith, especially during this time.

As part of the Dawn to Dusk campaign, the ECMC invited Muslims from Edmonton to make monetary donations to the Food Bank during Ramadan. Through the incredible generosity of this community, an astounding $102,000 was raised! While most of this donation came from the Muslim community, we are also deeply grateful for the support of friends of the Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities including Christians and Hindus.

In the past five years, Edmonton’s Food Bank has seen a dramatic increase in people seeking assistance with their most basic need – food. In 2019, an average of 21,385 people were fed through hamper programs each month. As we fast forward to 2024, this increased to 41,697 people monthly.

This incredible gift from the Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities reflects the generosity of the Muslim community both as an organization and through the kindness of individual donors. It is more than just financial support; it is an expression of worship, friendship, empathy, kindness, and solidarity. Their commitment to helping others will allow Edmonton’s Food Bank to continue meeting the growing need in our community, ensuring that those facing hunger receive not only food, but also care and compassion from their neighbours.

Our sincere thanks to the Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities for this most generous gift.
