Community & Collective Kitchens in Edmonton đ´
Calling all Community and Collective Kitchens in Edmonton! Are you dedicated to enhancing health literacy and promoting a healthier community? We want to connect with you!
Edmontonâs Food Bank is offering support to groups looking to start or expand their community kitchen programs.
What are Community or Collective Kitchens?
Community or Collective Kitchens (different terms, same concept) are community-based cooking programs that bring groups together to prepare food, cook and eat. These kitchens help individuals share knowledge, culture, resources, and cooking skills, fostering connections within the community. Community kitchens aim to provide skills and experience in creating healthy meals on a budget while offering space and opportunities to learn about cooking, food preparation, and new recipes. At our community kitchen partnerships, we create a space where people can cook food, enhance social skills, have fun, build connections, and most importantly, cook and eat together.
How do community kitchens work?
Community kitchens often are set up at non profits or anywhere where a commercial kitchen is available. Participants can take turns leading the kitchen and recipes can be anything the group is familiar with. Groups can work together to save money, either by buying items on sale or using donated food from Edmontonâs Food Bank. Enough food is prepared so each participant can take some home to their families, saving them money and cooking time.
Do Community kitchens cost anything?
Some kitchens may charge a small fee for classes to cover the cost of food, while other community kitchens are sponsored by nonprofits to assist lower-income or food-insecure individuals. Edmontonâs Food Bank is committed to supporting programs citywide, whether you need planning support, ingredients, or kitchen leaders, to ensure your community kitchen thrives.
