Why You’ll See Plastic Bags at Our Upcoming Edmonton Food Drive (September 27, 2025)

At Edmonton’s Food Bank, we do our best to make every decision with both our community and our environment in mind. With Edmonton’s plastic bag bylaw now in effect, you may be surprised to see plastic bags used in the upcoming door-to-door Edmonton Food Drive supporting Edmonton’s Food Bank. We want to share the “why” behind this choice.

Where the bags came from

Before the bylaw began, many large companies generously donated their unused, brand-new plastic bags to Edmonton’s Food Bank. These bags, some dating back as far as 2019, were destined for the landfill. Instead, we’ve been putting them to good use for years helping us sort produce, organize food donations, and pack emergency bags for people in need.

Why they’re being used for the food drive

For this year’s food drive, the brown paper bags we ordered unfortunately won’t arrive in time. From past experience, we know that providing a bag with a flyer nearly doubles the amount of food collected. We are currently providing a food hamper to over 40,000 people monthly and we feel it is important to maximize food collection events. Rather than miss this important opportunity, we’re making the most of the resources we have on hand by using those donated, pre-bylaw plastic bags one final time.

Better to use than to waste

We understand that plastic bags are not ideal. But by using these bags now, we extend their life and prevent them from going to the landfill. Most importantly, they help us gather the food our neighbours need.

Thank you for understanding

We are grateful for your ongoing support as we adapt, reduce waste where possible, and ensure families across Edmonton have access to food. Every can, box, or bag of food you share makes a difference.

Together, we are finding practical solutions, making the most of community generosity, and feeding people today. Feel free to contact us directly if you have any questions about these decisions at info@edmontonsfoodbank.com.
