About Guru Nanak
Guru Nanak was the founder and first Guru of the Sikh faith, born in 1469. He formalized the three key pillars of Sikhism:
• Kirat Karni — Honest living
• Vand Chakna — Sharing with others
• Naam Japna — Focus on God
Edmonton's Food Bank thanks the Sikh Community of Edmonton, My Radio 580 AM, The Universal Radio 97.9 FM, and Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib for their generous support of the 2026 Radio-a-thon!
The celebration of Gurpurab is a deeply spiritual and joyous occasion for the Sikh community. Feel free to join the celebration and attend community events at a Gurdwara, recognizing these main traditions:
Akhand Path: A 48-hour continuous reading of the holy scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, is held at Gurdwaras, usually starting two days prior.
Nagar Kirtan: Colorful, early-morning processions are often held in the days leading up to the main celebration.
Shabad Kirtan: Devotional hymns and recitations are sung throughout the day.
Langar: A free communal meal is prepared and served to all attendees, emphasizing the core Sikh tenet of equality and selfless service.
